It's a good thing they make something called breathable bumpers! Jake has always liked to snuggle his face into things. When he was a newborn this was your chest. As he has gotten older and more mobile, this has evolved into snuggling into burp cloths, blankets, and his lamb blanket. As soon as he falls asleep, we remove these things from his crib; if we take them away before he falls asleep he just cries and cries. His ability to put himself to sleep definitely requires something, anything to snuggle! This snuggling habit doesn't just occur when he's sleepy either- he loves to play by rubbing things over his face when he's happy and wide awake, too. Don't worry, we won't let him smother himself:)
Now that he can roll from back to stomach and back again, he loves to sleep on his stomach. As a result, this snuggling tendency of his has led him to snuggle into his bumpers! It's amazing that he can breathe, but breathe he can (I tried out these bumpers myself before putting them on, and they really do work). Why he doesn't like to sleep on his stomach in the middle of his crib, I'm not sure! Here are some amusing pictures of Jake's snuggling and face-covering antics!
All that room in the crib and Jake has to snuggle right up next to the bumpers:)
No. He's not playing hide'n'seek. He's breathing fine, we promise:) He's snuggled with his arms underneath of him so his face really isn't flat on the mattress (despite how it looks).
He loves to snuggle that lamb over his face.
His lamb blanket was in the wash, and he didn't have any clean burp cloths so I gave him a sleeper to snuggle so he could fall asleep. Obviously he isn't particular about what he snuggles with... he just wants something near his face:)
He was wide awake playing and decided it would be fun to hide under the burp cloth. I don't think he realized that we could still see him:)

Oh, Beth, that would terrify me too. I too would go in and remove blankets after baby falls asleep. The good news is soon, he'll be able to move around so much you won't worry about things like that anymore. Little Philip routinely removes all his clothing at some point during the night and goes "fetal" under his covers in the bottom corner of his bed. There is no preventing this, period. He's four and so far, no suffocation!
Couldn't read the whole story, after picturing you breathing on the bumpers. Glad all is well, he is getting so big!
